What is kinesiotape? Developed in Japan by a chiropractor, kinesiotape is used to decrease inflammation, facilitate relaxation of tight muscles, stimulate weak or inhibited muscles, and improve joint function. Taping can be particularly helpful in maintaining the effects of a massage by helping to re-educate the body’s proprioceptive system (e.g., resetting the nervous system’s perception of normal muscular activity).
When would you use it? Taping will be an option for a variety of conditions or injuries, including muscle strains, medial and lateral epicondylitis, plantar fasciatis, rotator cuff injuries, carpal tunnel, thoracic outlet syndrome, postural issues, and so forth.
How long does the tape stay on my skin? Kinesiotape can stay on your body for up to four days. Once applied, it is not noticeable, though the ends may begin to unravel and may need to be snipped or tacked down in order to keep the remaining tape in place.
Can I participate in normal activities while wearing the tape? Yes, you may shower, exercise, etc. Just don’t rub the tape – pat it dry if it gets wet.
Does the tape hurt? The tape is latex free and does not bother most people. Within minutes, it blends into your skin and should not be noticeable. If you have very sensitive skin, a lotion can be applied prior to application to reduce the possibility of a reaction. When you are ready to remove the tape, it can be rolled away, pushing down on the skin and following the direction of hair growth (if it sticks, remove in the shower or tub).
What about body hair? The tape will not stick over excess hair. Some clients may need to shave the area being taped prior to application.
What are your fees for taping? Through August, 2008, there will be no additional fee for my time as long as the taping takes place after your massage session. I will, however, request a small fee to offset the cost of the tape (most applications will cost $2 to $5).
